The Teaching & Learning Center invites all faculty and professional staff to attend its Spring 2008 series on topics you have suggested. The Roundtable series format is new this semester. Each session will begin with a short presentation on a topic designed to stimulate a discussion among attendees. We invite you to join in the conversation. All Roundtables will be held in the Faculty Lounge (except the "Memories" presentation in Walnut Hall). Food and beverage will be provided.

In addition, the TLC encourages you to drop by every morning for Breakfast in the Lounge. The Faculty Lounge has wireless capability, a hard connection, a Tandberg (voice and Visual) Internet communicator, and a plasma television. Aramark provides fresh coffee (regular and decaf), tea, juice, and donuts/rolls at a nominal charge.

After a short presentation on Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), the facilitators will lead a discussion on whether PLCs can/should replace the presentation method of professional development.  The discussion will also focus on whose responsibility is professional development.

The Distance Learning Academy (DLA) Showcase provides faculty participants the opportunity to demonstrate their instructional products and share how their products were used to develop critical thinking skills for students in a distance education or web supported class. Improving Faculty Evaluations
Understanding and improving faculty course evaluations (FCEs) is a widely debated topic among faculty. For example, does giving less work and grading easier correlate to better FCE ratings? This presentation will discuss factors that do and do not affect FCEs, and factors that bias FCEs, including grading. Interpreting EKU's IDEA form will be considered. FCEs and student learning will be discussed. Emphasis and specific examples will be given related to improving teaching areas that highly correlate with student learning.

Technology Series - "Create Student Interactive Instructional Products for Your Online Course--It's Easy!"
The Instructional Development Center will demonstrate “Soft Chalk” – Lesson Builder. This program is easy to use and allows faculty members or content experts to create interactive web pages for their e-learning course. See a demonstration of instructional products created in Lesson Builder and used to engage students with online lessons that include pop-up text annotations, self-assessment quizzes, and interactive learning. Products work well with a course management system or can be uploaded to a web-site for students to access.

TLC Presents: Communism to Capitalism: The Slovakia Story
Professor Jan Pokrivcak was in his late-teens in 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down and the Communist government in Czechoslovakia was overthrown. Three years later, the Czech and Slovak Republics became separate entities. Having watched these events personally, and having been educated under three different regimes, Professor Pokrivcak brings a rare first-person account of the change and transition that has overtaken Slovakia in the past three decades.

Professional Learning Community Exhibit: Enhancing Online Learning with Quality Video and Audio Instructional Products - Best Practices Applied
During this exhibit guests will have the opportunity to meet with the PLC 2007-08 participants who have worked diligently with the Instructional Development Center (IDC) to develop online instructional videos for their respective departments. The IDC has provided instructional design and production assistance in the development of quality video and audio instructional products using Camtasia screen capturing software.
